What is Selvedge?

The edge that finishes itself. Selvedge—from "self-edge"—is what happens when a shuttle loom completes a row. The thread loops back on itself, forming a clean, bound edge that will never fray. The Loom (The Process)

Shuttle loom. The slow way. Most denim today is made on projectile looms—fast, wide, efficient. A shuttle loom runs narrow and slow, passing a single shuttle back and forth across the warp. It takes longer. It produces less. But the tension it creates gives the fabric a density and character that modern looms simply cannot replicate.
